The BHP Billiton Science Awards recognise the outstanding work done by science teachers in Australia.
The BHP Billiton Science Awards are a partnership between BHP Billiton, the world's largest diversified resources company, CSIRO, Australia's premier scientific research organization and ASTA, the Australian Science Teachers Association.
Eight teacher finalists were selected from around Australia.
National Winner
Ann Burke
Marist Regional College, TAS
When Ann moved from Ireland to Tasmania nine years ago, the students she left behind were keen to continue their research project with her. Ann linked up these students in Ireland with her new students in Tasmania so that the students could work together on a joint project. Since then Ann has continued to demonstrate her commitment, skill and passion in promoting student scientific research. Ann has created a learning environment that motivates students to think creatively and provides students with the skills to undertake their own scientific investigations.
Ann has made scientific knowledge accessible and interesting to students and several of her students have gone on to achieve success in international science competitions.
As part of her prize, Ann will accompany the winning students to the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, (Intel ISEF), in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
